Fixed implantology with Toronto-type prosthesis: what it is and when it is indicated

Implantology has revolutionized the way to rehabilitate patients with total edentulism (i.e. the complete lack of teeth in one or both arches). Among the most effective, stable and aesthetically satisfying solutions, we find the Toronto-type prosthesis, also known as the Toronto Bridge.
But what is it exactly? And why are more and more patients choosing it?
What is the Toronto prosthesis?
The Toronto prosthesis is a fixed prosthesis on dental implants designed to replace all the teeth in an arch (upper or lower). Unlike traditional removable dentures, this solution is screwed onto 4 or more osseointegrated dental implants and remains fixed in the mouth, offering comfort, stability and a very natural result.
The advantages of the Toronto-type prosthesis
✅ Fixed and stable: it does not move during chewing or speaking, unlike traditional removable prostheses.
✅ Optimal functionality: allows you to go back to chewing effectively even more consistent foods.
✅ Natural aesthetics: the final appearance is taken care of in detail and can reproduce the aesthetics of natural teeth and gums.
✅ Reduced number of implants: 4-6 implants are enough to support an entire arch, which makes it a less invasive solution.
✅ Long-term solution: with proper oral hygiene and periodic check-ups, it can last for many years.
How does the treatment take place?
The Toronto implantology process with prosthesis is generally divided into these phases:
- Clinical and radiographic evaluation – The patient’s general health, the quantity and quality of available bone are analyzed (often via 3D CT).
- Insertion of dental implants – Small titanium screws are surgically inserted into the maxillary or mandibular bone.
- Temporary phase – Sometimes it is possible to apply a fixed temporary prosthesis in the following 24-72 hours (immediate loading).
- Making the definitive prosthesis – After the period of osseointegration, the definitive prosthesis is made of resin or ceramic, screwed onto the implants.
Who is it suitable for?
The Toronto prosthesis is suitable for patients:
- with total edentulism or severely compromised teeth that cannot be recovered;
- who want a fixed solution and cannot tolerate removable prostheses;
- with sufficient residual bone for the positioning of the implants (possibly regenerable in some cases).
Maintenance and checks
Even if it is a fixed prosthesis, daily hygiene remains essential. The patient must:
- use interdental brushes and floss to clean under the prosthetic structure;
- carry out regular dental checks (at least every 6 months);
- if necessary, arrange for the removal of the prosthesis by the dentist for professional cleaning.
